Creating a serene sanctuary in the city

It’s easy to see the Japanese influence on Craftsman architecture in this historic 1908 home, and that was our jumping-off point for this project. We designed a landscape that embodies the traditional Japanese garden’s balance between wildness and control. The back garden is a private space that inspires reflection and a sense of tranquility even with the skyline of downtown Los Angeles visible just beyond the fence.

An unused driveway gets a family-friendly makeover.

The backyard of this classic Mediterranean home had previously been designed as a lovely outdoor gathering place perfect for entertaining, but as their family grew the homeowners wanted to carve out more kid-friendly space for their children. A narrow foundation planting bed softens the expanse of green turf while maximizing play area. Poured concrete pavers tie the side yard to the concrete patio, where adults can dine and socialize with their children close at hand.

A Cottage Garden with a California Twist.

This owners of this lovely Larchmont home were looking for help with their bland planting beds that “came with the house.” We wanted to achieve a multilayered tapestry of flowers and foliage, for a cottage garden look that would maintain interest year-round. In the back yard we went with a looser, more carefree style while in the front yard we wanted to balance the layered cottage look with elements of formality by way of classic white roses and symmetrical boxwood and juniper.
