Creating a serene sanctuary in the city
It’s easy to see the Japanese influence on Craftsman architecture in this historic 1908 home, and that was our jumping-off point for this project. We designed a landscape that embodies the traditional Japanese garden’s balance between wildness and control. The back garden is a private space that inspires reflection and a sense of tranquility even with the skyline of downtown Los Angeles visible just beyond the fence.
Railroad ties form a pathway through the mounding velvet grass, which is filling in slowly but surely.
Japanese wisteria rises from a river of mondo grass, bordered by bright celadon ogon and creeping jenny.
Burgundy azalea and Japanese maple look stately among green Juniper and golden creeping jenny.
A dry river bed provides both form and function, inviting exploration while helping with drainage.
